Abstrak

Problematic social media use (social media addiction) has become a dominant mental health and behavioral issue among adolescents worldwide, and one of its most significant consequences is the degradation of sleep quality. This study aims to systematically investigate the relationship between social media addiction and sleep quality in adolescents on the basis of scientific literature published over the last five years. The review followed the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines; literature was searched across electronic databases (Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect) for articles published between 2021 and 2025, and from an initial pool of records, 20 studies meeting the inclusion criteria were comprehensively analyzed. The synthesis demonstrates a consistent and significant negative association between social media addiction and adolescent sleep quality. Three primary mechanisms link the two variables: (1) sleep displacement, (2) cognitive and emotional arousal triggered by content exposure and the Fear of Missing Out (FoMO), and (3) blue-light exposure before bedtime, which disrupts melatonin secretion. Parental mediation of bedtime internet-use rules emerged as a key protective factor. Social media addiction consistently worsens adolescent sleep quality; interventions centered on sleep-hygiene education and the restriction of night-time screen time are therefore strongly needed.
